We cheat.

For those of you who don't know me that well... I am a rule-follower. I am sure that will surprise some of my high school friends that read this blog but I am definitely a rule-follower these days. Our doctor told us to give Audrey rice cereal when she was 5 months old. We did it the other day. She's 4 1/2 months. I know that you mommas who've been there done that are probably laughing at me right now but I can't help it. What the doctor says goes...usually. He also said not to put it in her bottle. He said to feed it to her with a spoon. We put it in her bottle. That is working out to some extent- we just can't give her all that she needs that way. The doctor (I think he said that- I may have read it somewhere)said to mix it and give it to her on a spoon; that putting it to her lips would cause her sucking reflex to kick in and she would suck it off the spoon--- whateva! That didn't happen. It just went every where and she gnawed on the spoon. THEN-- my friend, Dawn, came over and showed me how to mix it pretty thick and shove it in her mouth. That worked better but we have to practice, practice, practice so that we don't get it all over ourselves and fifteen burp cloths. Here are some pictures of when Clay and I tried it for the first time. The consistency of the cereal is like milk. She wasn't too keen on it.

Well, I'm glad that you're a rule follower. Tara has been too and that has worked out great for her! I, however, gave Jack cereal at 1 month, and we started baby food about 3 months along with table food. I didn't follow the rules AT ALL! We were in survival mode at that time though. We did mix it really thick and that makes it easier to eat. But J was always a good eater so he took to the spoon FAST! Sleeping and screaming were his problem areas. LOL Funny pictures of her trying to learn to eat. She looks very healthy and happy whichever way you do it!

Doctors don't always know what is best! We are the Moms and we know what best suites our children. The only scary thing about putting the cereal in the milk is if she gets choked she will more likely aspirate it into her lungs. Not to say don't do it, because I did it too! Holding her upright will lessen the chances of her choking. It took my girls a good while to learn to eat from a spoon. It seemed like when we got it in their mouth the majority of it came right back out. You could feed them the same bite several times. GOOD LUCK!

She is just precious! We started giving Caleb cereal when he was a month old, in his bottle. As he got older we would thicken it up, then I guess around 4 mos. I would put him in his bouncie seat where he could kinda lean back just a bit and started him on the spoon. She will get used to it and love it.

yeah, don't blame you on waiting. i would not give her any other food until 6 months... sounds crazy, but i see many kids having food allergies/ allergies and they say it happens from giving food to them too early. I waited i think until 5 months on ivy too. good luck on that, i know it's hard

Hilarious!! We actually started feeding C cereal mixed with whole milk at 4 months because she was having so much trouble gaining weight - not enough "butter fat" in her mama's milk. But, one thing the doctor told me was try NOT to put it in a bottle so that I would not have to break her from a bottle down the road (because I strictly nursed, no pumping) and the thicker the better to Caroline. She hated it when we first tried, but I would just keep thickening it up until she decided it was pretty good:) Guess what...she has turned out just fine!

Oh yea, glad to hear you are a "rule follower" these days!!!

She will get the hang of it eventually! It took Lyla forever to take to using a spoon. The bouncy seat works best when they are leaning back. I also found that Lyla hated the cereal from the box. I found the cereal already mixed in the baby food area she liked much better! It has a bit of fruit mixed with it.

Very funny pictures!! Our doctor suggested to not give Emmie ANYthing except breastmilk until 6 months, but he also tells me ALL the time to realize Emmie is NOT her actual age (when it comees to developmental things, but her "adjusted" age, so technically she is only 2 1/2 months old! I also have heard the same thing Tina said about them getting allergies if you feed before 6 months, but who knows!! I figured I would stick out the nursing only until 6 months and go from there!! You are doing a good job though and if Audrey likes it and you feel it is best, don't worry about what everybody else thinks, YOU are her mommy and if it REALLY wasn't okay, your doctor would tell you so!! Plus, since when do you care what everybody else thinks??!! LOL You're as headstrong as I am, at least you were!! LOL I'm sure you're fine with whatever you decide.
